Bill Maher says Christie is ruining state's reputation
19 February 2012
Comedian Bill Maher laid into Governor Chris Christie after he vetoed same-sex marriage legislation last week. Before a studio audience, Maher said last Friday that Governor Christie took the already bad reputation that his home state has and made it worse.
"It takes away the one thing I had," Maher said, noting that New Jersey is the most commonly made fun of state in the union. "The one thing we had is we are from the sophisticated state of New Jersey from the Northeast. We're not some yokel, car-on-the-lawn state."
Maher and his panel were answering a question on Real Time about whether the governor's veto was "not only dick-ish but also extremely short sighted."
Reporter Erin McPike of Real Clear Politics said that Christie is playing to his base as he may be a contender for the 2016 presidential campaign.
Former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer said Christie's move was "typical" pandering.

Tennessee lawmakers advance the "don't say gay" bill
19 February 2012
Every time I hear about this story, I am simply amazed by the sheer dumbness of the matter. A bill to restrict teaching about homosexuality before high school cleared its first hurdle in the Tennessee state House of Representatives, setting the stage for a second year of debate on the appropriate way to handle discussion about gays and lesbians with schoolchildren.
The House Education subcommittee approved the so-called "Don't say gay" bill on a voice vote last Wednesday, renewing a debate that roiled the legislature last spring over whether elementary and middle schools should be allowed to initiate discussions about homosexuality.
The panel accepted the version of the bill that passed the state Senate late in last year's session. The vote kept the bill on a path to be voted on by the full House before the legislature adjourns in the spring.
Opponents say it will not curb talk about homosexuality among grade school kids but send the signal that it should be stigmatized. But several lawmakers argued that it would protect parents' right to educate their children about their beliefs on their own terms.
The measure, labeled "Don't say gay" by its opponents, has proved to be one of the most emotionally charged bills to go before the Tennessee legislature in recent years. Gay and lesbian groups have led opposition to the bill, but many Nashville high school students have turned out as well.
To me," said high school student Thomas Kibby to USA today, "they're sending a message that in society gay people aren't really equal. This law would be kind of moving backwards."
Supporters alluded to the emotion of the issue, but they said the principle at stake was ensuring that children receive appropriate instruction in a publicly funded setting.

Pelosi wants to add gay marriage to election platform
19 February 2012
The Democrats don't think they are asking for trouble as they prepare for this year's election but they are making waves. A move to put gay marriage in the Democratic Party platform this year is on the table.
Two days ago, the pro-gay-rights group Freedom To Marry called for Democrats to add a gay-marriage plank to their platform at the convention in Charlotte, NC in early September. Today, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said she was on board.
"I was talking about myself, not the entire Democratic Party, or speaking for the President," Pelosi told a new conference audience.
Obama, who opposed gay marriage in the 2008 campaign while supporting civil unions, has said his position is evolving, and many Democrats believe it is just a matter of time before he gets on board.
But there is no indication he plans to do so before his reelection in the fall.
"I hope the evolution continues," said Pelosi, whose district includes Stan Francisco's prominent gay community. "It always does, doesn't it?"
Polls show Americans are about evenly divided on gay marriage, although the trend is clearly moving in the direction of approval.

Roland Martin suspended by CNN for offensive tweets
8 February 2012
Roland Martin may have been joking about Super Bowl-related topics with some off-color tweets Sunday night, but his bosses at CNN definitely didn't find it funny.
The political contributor has been suspended by the network after his remarks - most notably about David Beckham's H&M underwear ad - were called homophobic.
Gay-rights powerhouse GLAAD pushed hard for CNN to fire Martin. That did not happen, but disciplinary sanctions were taken, and his return date is not clear.
In a statement, CNN said:
"[Martin's] tweets were regrettable and offensive. Language that demeans is inconsistent with the values and culture of our organization, and is not tolerated. We have been giving careful consideration to this matter, and Roland Martin will not be appearing on our air for the time being."
Martin tried to backpedal by issuing an apology on Monday stating that he "regretted any offense [his] words caused."
GLAAD hopes that CNN and Roland Martin will work together to address the goal of reducing anti-LGBT violence.

Washington State becomes #7 - and the beat goes on
8 February 2012
Washington state lawmakers voted to approve gay marriage today, setting the stage for the state to become the seventh in the nation to allow same-sex couples to wed.
The action comes a day after a federal appeals court declared California's ban on gay marriage unconstitutional, saying it was a violation of the civil rights of gay and lesbian couples.
The Washington House passed the bill on a 55-43 vote. Supporters in the public viewing galleries stood and cheered as many on the Democratic side of the House floor hugged after the vote.
The state Senate approved the measure last week, and the bill now goes to Democratic Governor Chris Gregoire, who is expected to sign it into law next week.
Gregoire watch the vote in the wings with the bill's sponsor, Senator Ed. Murray, who is gay and has sponsored gay rights legislation for years. Murray said the vote marked "a day that will be remembered in the history of this state."

Prop 8 - Unconstitutional says the high court
7 February 2012
In a landmark ruling that could have legal implications in the months to come, a federal appeals court Tuesday struck down California's ban on same-sex marriage. This clears the way for the U.S. Supreme Court to rule on gay marriage as early as next year.
The 2-1 decision by a panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals found that Proposition 8, the 2008 ballot measure that limited marriage to one man and one woman, violated the U.S. Constitution. The architects of Prop. 8 have vowed to appeal.
The ruling, however monumental, is narrow and likely to be limited to California.
The court ruling said, "Proposition 8 served no purpose, had no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gay and lesbians in California."
The ruling upheld a decision by retired Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn R. Walker, who struck down the ballot measure in 2010 after holding an unprecedented trial on the nature of sexual orientation and the history of marriage.
In a separate decision, the appeals court refused to invalidate Walker's ruling on the grounds that he should have disclosed he was in a long term same-sex relationship. Walker, a Republican appointee who is openly gay, said after his ruling that he had been in a relationship with another man for 10 years. He has never said whether he and his partner wished to marry.

Finland's gay presidential candidate gave it a good try but fell short!
6 February 2012
For his supporters, Pekka Haavisto (pictured above, on right) had a tough road ahead but it did not take away from his amazing accomplishments. Haavisto defied the fear of intolerance by running for the office of President of Finland against staunch conservative Sauli Niinisto. The gay environmentalist who lives with an Ecuadorean immigrant faced a presidential runnoff with Niinisto who was widely considered the front runner.
Unfortunately, Haavisto could not stave off a strong conservative party movement happening in the country losing the runoff 63% vs 37%. The win by Niinisto cements the hold the conservative party has with a conservative prime minister, conservative president and a majority in the parliament.
Among the Nordic nations, which take pride in being progressive and tolerant, Finland lags behind its neighbors in legally recognizing same-sex partnerships. Denmark was the first to do so in 1989, followed by Norway in 1993, Sweden in 1995 and Iceland (whose current Prime Minister is openly Lesbian) in 1996.
Finland's registered partnership law took effect tin 2002, and Haavisto was among the first to use it, entering a union with a hairdresser from Ecuador.

GLAAD is mad at Roland Martin - wants him fired!
6 February 2012
CNN's Roland Martin always manages to put his foot in his mouth. He is not afraid to voice his opinion on a variety of things and he has probably pissed off people on both the right and the left. So when he started tweeting his "disapproval" of the David Beckham underwear ads with hints of homophobia in it, he certainly can't cry fowl.
He tweeted:

followed by:

and when people started blasting him, he followed with:

GLAAD was quick to jump on the bandwagon calling for CNN to fire Martin. "Martin's tweets today, " said GLAAD, "advocating violence against gay people weren't an accident. They are a part of a larger pattern for Martin."
Martin formally responded to the backlash stating: "Fam, let me address the issue that some in the LGBT community have raised regarding some of my Super Bowl tweets yesterday. I made several cracks about soccer as I do all the time. I was not referring to sexuality directly or indirectly regarding the David Beckham ad, I'm sorry folks took it other wise. It was meant to be a deliberately over the top and sarcastic crack about soccer; I do not advocate violence of any kind against anyone gay, or not. As anyone who follows me on Twitter knows, anytime soccer comes up during football season it's another chance for me to take a playful shot at soccer, nothing more."
GLAAD dismissed his explanation stating that Martin has a "history of anti-LGBT rhetoric." Whether he does or not may still be debatable in some people's eyes, the question remains "should Martin have made those tweets?" And should Martin be fired?
What do you think? Has GLAAD gone too far again? Let us know below.

Is Daniel Radcliffe drunk in some Harry Potter scenes?
4 February 2012
It seems that child actors always have the toughest time coping with their stardom and insecurities. Gay icon Daniel Radcliffe seems to be no exception.
In an interview he gave the British celebrity news magazine Heat last week, Harry Potter star and actor Daniel Radcliffe admitted he was drunk while filming some scenes for the "Harry Potter" movies during a period in his life. He admitted to drinking "nightly" before returning to work the next day.
"I have a very addictive personality. It was a problem," Radcliffe told the Heat, "People with problems like that are very adept at hiding it. It was bad. I don't want to go into details, but I drank a lot and it was daily -- I mean nightly. I can honestly say I never drank at work on "Harry Potter." I went into work still drunk, but I never drank at work. I can point to many scenes where I'm just gone. Dead behind the eyes."
The 22 year old British actor was propelled to fame at age 11 after being cast to play boy wizard Harry Potting the movies based on J.K. Rowling's best selling novels. Radcliffe has gone on to receive critical praise for his theatre work in the Broadway and West End productions "Equus" and "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying." He is currently on the promotional rounds for his film, "The Woman In Black," out in theaters on Friday.

Manning ordered to face court martial in WikiLeaks Case
4 February 2012
Confinement for life, dishonorable discharge, reduction to the lowest enlisted pay grade and total forfeiture of all pay and allowances - that faith could await Private Bradley Manning in the court martial case against him. He is charged with releasing thousands of classified documents while on duty as a intelligence analyst in Iraq.
Major General Michael Linnington, commander of the Military District of Washing, made the decision after reviewing the case and the recommendations from two other officers. A military judge will set the date for his arraignment, motion hearings and trial.
Manning, 24, is accused of "aiding the enemy" and stealing hundreds of thousand of classified US government secrets and cables, which were eventually made public on the internet by WikiLeaks. US military officials content that Manning knew those documents would be published on the internet and be accessible to the enemy.
If convicted, Manning will go down in history as being responsible for the biggest leak of classified information in U.S. history.
